As a consequence of the unfavourable weather, the maize crop was very poor in 2007 and 2008 causing a humanitarian catastrophe in the region. 400 children were admitted to the hospital with symptoms of extreme malnutrition and emaciation (marasmus) and protein malnutrition (kwashiorkor). The 200 beds of the hospital are now accommodating 600 patients, of whom 400 are children.

The situation is aggravated by the fact that the ripple effect of the economic recession has reached the country, and prices have risen enormously: one litre of diesel oil costs $3, a small bucket of corn that used to cost five cents is now $5.

The Saint Damien alms-house, established by the Community, is home to forty homeless, those suffering from chronic illnesses and the elderly. 200-300 persons are fed here daily.
The fields in the vicinity of the building have been distributed in small plots to the needy, with the aim of encouraging them to become self-sufficient and to help them to regain their dignity.
The community supports the schooling of disadvantaged children.

The patients' pastoral care is an important facet of the Community's life. Mass is performed every Sunday in the hospitals' courtyard, and the Blessed Sacrament is carried monthly in procession through the hospital wards. That is when the patients have the opportunity to say their prayers of supplication and thanksgiving.
Numerous young people participate in the Monday and Thursday masses and vespers.
